PRACTICE THE WORK—NOT JUST THE DEFINITIONS

OTB Practice Studio

Where behavior-technician training becomes hands-on practice.

New behavior technicians have to do more than remember terminology. They must read a behavior plan, follow its instructions as written, recognize what is happening during a session, collect accurate data, teach skills, respond appropriately, and document the work—all while remaining engaged with the client.

OTB Practice Studio gives learners a structured place to practice those responsibilities before they are expected to manage them in the field. Through realistic simulations and guided activities, learners practice reading plans, making observations, recording session data, following clinical directions, and managing multiple responsibilities within the same session.

OTB Practice Studio is becoming a permanent part of The Behavior Technician Mixtape: 40 Hours to Certification because completing a 40-hour training should include more than watching lessons and answering quiz questions.

THE WORK HAPPENS ALL AT ONCE

Practice Managing the Whole Session

During an actual session, a technician may need to run skill-acquisition programs, recognize target behavior, record different types of data, follow prompting procedures, respond according to the behavior plan, and remain attentive to the client at the same time.

OTB Practice Studio helps learners practice putting those responsibilities together instead of learning each skill only in isolation.

01

READ AND USE THE BEHAVIOR PLAN

Practice locating important information within a behavior plan, including target behaviors, replacement skills, prevention strategies, prompting procedures, reinforcement plans, data-collection instructions, and technician-response protocols.

02

FOLLOW THE PLAN AS WRITTEN

Practice carrying out clinical directions as intended without adding personal interpretations, skipping important steps, or making changes outside the behavior technician’s role.

03

COLLECT DATA DURING THE SESSION

Observe simulated session events and practice recording frequency, duration, latency, interval, ABC, trial-by-trial, prompt-level, and percentage-of-opportunity data when appropriate.

04

TRACK BEHAVIOR AND SKILL ACQUISITION

Practice collecting target-behavior data while also recording learner performance across skill-acquisition programs, including independent responses, prompted responses, errors, and levels of assistance.

05

MANAGE MULTIPLE SESSION RESPONSIBILITIES

Build fluency with remaining engaged, delivering instructions, using prompts, reinforcing responses, observing behavior, recording data, and following the plan without losing track of what is happening.

06

DOCUMENT WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED

Use observations and recorded data to practice writing objective session notes that describe performance, behavior, prompts, technician actions, client responses, and relevant environmental events.

INSIDE THE PRACTICE STUDIO

Watch. Record. Respond. Document.

PRACTICE AREA 1

PLAN PRACTICE

Review sample behavior plans and technician instructions. Identify what should happen before, during, and after a target behavior or teaching opportunity—and distinguish plan-based directions from actions that would fall outside the technician’s role.

PRACTICE AREA 2

DATA LAB

Observe realistic simulated sessions and record what occurs while the activity continues. Learners practice identifying the correct events, selecting the appropriate measurement system, tracking behavior and skill-acquisition data, and maintaining accuracy while managing competing session demands.

PRACTICE AREA 3

NOTE LAB

Review a completed simulated session and write an objective note using the available plan information, observations, and recorded data. Guided feedback highlights what was documented clearly, what may have been missed, and what should be reviewed with a supervisor.

PART OF THE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Built Into the Behavior Technician Mixtape

OTB Practice Studio is being incorporated as a permanent part of The Behavior Technician Mixtape: 40 Hours to Certification.

Learners will complete the instructional content and receive opportunities to practice connecting that knowledge to realistic technician responsibilities. The goal is not to make a brand-new technician feel like an expert. The goal is to help learners enter supervision with stronger context, better questions, and a clearer understanding of how the pieces of a session fit together.

OTB Practice Studio supports training and preparation. It does not replace employer-specific onboarding, client-specific training, ongoing supervision, competency-assessment requirements, or the requirements of any credentialing organization.

OTB Practice Studio gives future behavior technicians a structured place to practice reading, observing, recording, responding, and documenting before those responsibilities become part of a real session.
